Polo in the Mountains at the Flying H Ranch

Rugged mountains tower above the playing fields in Big Horn, Wyoming, where polo players wear cowboy hats and the prescription for making a good polo pony includes careful breeding, hearty range grasses, and plenty of cattle work.

Cattle work?

According to Martin MacCarty, ranch manager at the Flying H Ranch in Big Horn, chasing cows is one of the best ways to season a green horse or to keep a playing pony fit and agile. Green-horse chukkas on the practise field prove him right — a point further emphasized after a few mornings spent moving cows from the highlands down to lower fields. Sure-footed and nimble, Flying H's green horses practically skip down hills while flushing cattle out of the trees, which must be good practise for full-speed galloping on the flat. But it's also easy to see that they love it.

How did you get into polo?
My whole family is into polo. I played in my first tournament when I was 10, in a women’s tournament that my mom had organised. A player got hurt, and by gender definitions I was the only available choice. I was hooked, and I decided early in my twenties that I wanted to turn professional.

What are your biggest accomplishments on the polo field?
I’ve had so many great opportunities and played with and against some of the best players in the world — but one of my favourite moments was winning the U.S. Open with Outback in 2000 Tim Gannon, Adolfo Cambiaso, and Lolo Castagnola.

What do you consider your best accomplishments off of the field?
Starting the Women’s Championship Tournament in 2005, which has grown to be the biggest and most prestigious women’s tournament in the world.

How does women’s polo in the U.S. compare to women’s polo in the U.K.?
England has a great base of women players, not only in local polo but also in high goal, which enables women to improve across the board. Here in the U.S. we’re seeing a huge growth in female players — again, both low-goal and high-goal — with women making up more than 40 percent of players in the USPA (United States Polo Association).

Polo Times

I am a regular contributor to the U.K.-based magazine Polo Times. My work for Polo Times has taken me to polo tournaments across Australia and in the U.S. for game reviews, player profiles, photography and polo-related features. Upcoming assignments include traveling to Wellington, Fla. at the end of April to cover the U.S. Open polo tournament — one of the most prestigious tournaments on the U.S. circuit — and an assignment to travel to Wyoming to file a polo-related travel article during August '09.
